ww2 german dagger

Theww2 german dagger, commonly known as the Wehrmacht dagger, is a significant artifact from the era of World War II. Designed primarily for German army officers, this dagger served both functional and ceremonial purposes. Its design reflects the military aesthetics of the time, emphasizing authority and craftsmanship.

Typically, the blade of the WWII German dagger measures around 30 centimeters in length and is made from high-quality steel. The double-edged blade is designed for combat, but many also feature intricate engravings, which may denote the rank or unit of the officer. This personalization adds historical value and uniqueness to each dagger.

The hilt is crafted for comfort and usability. Most grips are made from materials such as wood or synthetic alternatives, often featuring textured surfaces to ensure a secure hold. The crossguard, typically made of brass or aluminum, not only enhances the dagger’s appearance but also contributes to its balance and ease of handling.

The scabbard of the dagger is equally important. Usually constructed from metal, it often has a polished finish that complements the blade. Many scabbards are adorned with decorative elements, such as hanging rings, allowing the dagger to be worn during official ceremonies or parades. This aspect underscores the dagger’s dual role as both a weapon and a ceremonial item.

Collectors place high value on WWII German daggers due to their historical significance and unique designs. Each dagger is a testament to the experiences of those who served during the war, making them sought-after pieces in the militaria market. Authenticity is crucial in this realm, so collectors must ensure they verify the dagger’s provenance and condition before acquiring one.

Maintaining the dagger’s condition is essential for its preservation. Displaying it in a climate-controlled case protects it from humidity and dust. Regular cleaning with a soft cloth helps maintain its appearance without damaging the materials. Engaging with fellow collectors can further enhance one’s appreciation of the dagger’s history and value.

The Army dagger was officially issued on May 4, 1935, and designed by Paul Casburg. It was available in three handle colors: white, yellow, and orange. Early samples featured a white handle and were primarily produced by the Carl Eickhorn factory in Solingen.

These early production daggers had fittings that were heavily silver-plated over nickel, though the quality of plating varied among manufacturers.

The dagger was worn by various ranks within the army, from officers to field marshals, without any distinction between lower and higher-ranking officers.

The handle was made from celluloid and typically painted yellow. A prominent Army eagle adorned the front of the handguard, while the back remained plain and smooth. The dagger’s appearance was enhanced by wrapping a portapee around the handle. The example shown here exhibits typical wear marks, reflecting its use over time.
